Killing a bacterial killer

Tiny E. Coli bacteria are causing problems. Shiga toxin is the substance that E. Coli bacteria produces. When the substance enters the body, it can damage the blood vessels, allowing you to lose large amounts of blood. Singa toxin is a type of poison that can kill very quickly. These days at Carnegie Mellon University, they are trying to figure out a vaccine or something that could solve the problem. Luckily, they have found a mineral called  manganese that would lessen the bite of the Shiga toxin. This was very exciting for the people there and all over the world because in the past, in magazines, newspaper, on TV, there were large amounts of people that got sickened by E. Coli. Because they still can't fully trust the mineral, they are still doing different experiments on it.

P.S. Manganese - chemical element, atomic number 25

3 Types of Matter

Like the chat below, there is 3 building blocks of matter that is made of different elements. That is gas, liquid, and solid. Gas has lots of space so the elements move around more quicker. Liquid has less space than gas but it is able to move around. Also liquid cannot be cut into another shape so it is indefinite. Unlike solid, it can be cut into exact shapes and has exact mass and volume. It is because it's atoms are all together that they cannot move around. They also cannot expand unless you use heat.

SCIENCE: CURRENT EVENT 7

During September, scientist have discovered tiny particles that are called neutrinos that are faster than light. But however, till now scientist and physicists believed that there was no such thing that was faster than light in its race in or outer space. Then skeptical scientist did an experiment to see if superluminal neutrinos were real. They say light goes about 670 million miles per hour, but the new type of neutrinos were 450 million miles per hour underground. Neutrinos are known as particles that zip though everything at every time and has a part of light in it which makes it so fast. As an Italian group of scientist did an experiment on it to see which is faster. Apparently the physicist from Boston University look at the observation, they said that according to the speed and limits, light was still faster and why they thought neutrinos were faster was because they had particles of light to make it fast. Until now, they believe that the experiment was wrong and light is still faster.

SCIENCE: CURRENT EVENT 6

What do you think of a gemstone such as ruby or emerald? Jewelery? Stones? Color? Well most people think of it as a precious gemstone (jewelery) that has beautiful colors. Scientist and others think of gemstones differently. It is hard to find the gemstone's origin by its weight or its color. It could be from Australia or Arkansas or it might have a identical one from the Democratic Republic of Congo. How you can figure out the origin of the gemstone is by the atoms and molecules that lie beneath the shiny colored surface. Scientists of Geological Society in Minneapolis found out that with enough information, we see which country it came from, the area of that country, and sometimes even the actual mine that it came from. Many of gemstones, including diamonds, comes from a war-torn country. It is because of the blood mineral that is left after a war. That is why governments say that these days, now that they can figure out which area the gemstone is from, people should sell the gemstones by the country the gemstone is from. When the scientists test the gemstone with the method of the atoms and molecules, almost 95% is correct. For rubies and emeralds, 98% is correctly from that country. But scientists have to test more gemstones before the method becomes a commercial use.

I think that it is cool on how scientist can tell the origin of a gemstone by looking at its atoms and molecules. Its also awesome son how science can tell everything and it can be used on everything.

SCIENCE: CURRENT EVENT 5

Did you know that Earth is surrounded by ozone, a layer of gas that protects the Earth from harmful UV rays. Usually, all the time, the amount of ozone in each area is different at different times. Scientist, till now recorded the amount of ozone particularly the North Pole. It decreases and it increases but scientist have never seen the amount of ozone this low. Normally there is the most amount of ozone in the area of the Arctic Circle. But according to the record that they have recorded till now, few days ago, scientist have found out that early spring of 2011, the amount of ozone near the North Pole was way too low to say that it was a slight change in the amount of ozone. This way, scientists are worrying that there won't be enough ozone to protect the Earth from the sun's powerful UV rays. They have seen such happenings in the southern hemisphere but they have never seen such happenings near the North Pole. They call this the 'Arctic ozone hole' even though it does not have a full hole in it, it is so close for being a hole, the scientists call it that way. But they sill don't know if it is a slight change in the atmosphere or if its a loss of the ozone.
